Israeli Airstrike Targets Hezbollah Commander in Beirut, Killing At Least 70

Heightened Tensions Following Strike

Beirut Suffers Heavy Casualties

A powerful explosion has rocked the southern suburbs of Beirut, Lebanon, killing at least 70 people and injuring over 3,000, according to Lebanon's health minister. The Israeli military has claimed responsibility for the strike, stating that it targeted Fuad Shukr, a senior commander of the Lebanese Hezbollah militant group.

The strike has heightened tensions between Israel and Hezbollah, which is backed by Iran. In January, an Israeli airstrike in a Beirut suburb killed Saleh al-Arouri, a senior leader of Hamas, another Palestinian militant group that is also supported by Iran.

The Israeli military said it carried out the targeted strike in Beirut on Tuesday after Shukr was identified as responsible for planning and carrying out attacks against Israel.

The strike has sparked outrage in Lebanon, with many people condemning Israel for the civilian casualties. The Lebanese government has called for an international investigation into the incident.

The United Nations has also expressed concern over the strike, calling for an end to the violence and a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
